Helene, It is hard to believe you left three months ago. Tempus fugit! Like you, I have restarted exercise and I am walking a little each day. But I tried something new too...yoga, "gentle yoga." The instructor is good and I am limbering up. The class meets on Tuesday right after Anthem Authors but in another building. I dress for yoga so I am cutting the writing group as I feel toooo casual to get up and read. Happy to see you are still writing your blog.

Hi Helene,
I love the simplicity of this entry. "Focus on doing something good for someone, then do something for yourself." You are so right, when we do just this, we are fulfilled.

P.S. Have you considered sending in that article to Chicken Soup? Your story is a special one.

Adopt a Caregiver is the most fundamental and basic concept there can be. It should be mandatory in schools, for every child. It is beyond altruistic, it is just human decency. Most people look the other way when the term Alzheimer's come up. The caregiver can sometimes feel like they have leprosy. Beyond the devastation, the pain, the anger, the grief, the loss, the desperation the guilt, perhaps the most universal yet punishing aspect of the illness for any caregiver is the isolation. It simply does not have to be that way. As a physician and as a former primary caregiver of my own mother, whom was diagnosed when I was seventeen, I wish you all the best in carrying this foward. It should be a number one initiative for all Americans. I wish something like this had existed when I was a teenager caring for my mother. It was a terrible time, and I know something like this would have helped just a little, and I think it is something decent and hopeful that I would have carried with me, long after she died. Every caregiver should have a support like this.

I agree with you that everyone has a story to tell, and every one of them is compelling and meaningful. My favorite way to learn about life is not from a textbook, but from one's shared experience. Good luck with your memoir!
